A BUS company has become the first in the region to appoint deafness champions.
Eight Arriva North East staff have completed a Get Deaf Aware (GDA) training course, which aims to increase awareness of the everyday barriers faced by deaf people.
Training and development manager Tony Hart said: “We recognise the importance of training frontline staff to deal with the specific needs of each customer.
“Our champions have a newfound confidence because they know exactly what they need to do to communicate effectively with a deaf person and, going forward, they will be able to pass on what they have learned to their colleagues.”
