A BOOKMAKERS in north Durham was robbed shortly after opening today.
Two men, thought to be wearing masks, raided the Coral shop on Front Street in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, just after 9am.
They demanded takings from the till and safe and the pair fled with what police described as a 'substantial amount of money'.
The robbery left the lone female member of staff terrified.
Three customers, a woman and two men, were in the shop at the time, but were not hurt.
Acting Detective Inspector Tony Dumighan appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
He said: "This was a very frightening experience for the shop assistant but fortunately, neither she, nor the customers, were injured in any way.
"It is likely that the robbers turned left after they ran out the shop, and turned into a cut at the rear, which leads to the Manor House Residential Home.
"I would urge anyone who was going in or out to get in touch with us."
Anyone with information about the men who responsible for the robbery can call 0845-6060360.
