Pedestrian killed on dual carriageway

POLICE investigating the death of a pedestrian on a dual carriageway early today have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A 38-year-old man died following the collision with a bus on the northbound carriageway of the A194(M), just north of its junction with the A1(M), near the Blackfell area of Washington.

The 49-seat single deck bus, which was carrying no passengers at the time, was travelling northwards when the accident took place at 2.30am.

It led to the closure of a stretch of the A194(M) while further investigations took place at the scene.

Diversions were put in place via the A1(M) until the road was reopened shortly before 9am.

Police said the identity of the deceased pedestrian is not being made public until next of kin have been informed.

The bus driver was not hurt in the accident.

A Northumbria force spokesman said: "We would appeal for information from anyone travelling on the road, or who may have seen the pedestrian prior to the collision."

They are asked to contact force motor patrols on 03456-043043.
