Race for Life will raise thousands for charity

MORE than 3,000 women are expected to put their best foot forward on Sunday to raise money for the fight against cancer.

Jeanette Clennell, 44, of Town End Farm, Sunderland, will start the first in a series of Race for Life events across the North-East, which will take place at the Herrington Country Park, Penshaw, near Sunderland.

She will set 3,145 women on their way on the 5km women-only route.

Many of the women taking part are cancer survivors or are running in memory or celebration of a loved one whose life has been touched by cancer.

Ms Clennell will be taking part in the event for the second time with her nine-year-old daughter Emma to give something back for the treatment that saved her life after she was diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer.

Organisers Cancer Research UK are hoping that participants at the Sunderland event will raise £157,000.

Holly Howey, North-East Area Events Manager for Race for Life, said: "We are extremely grateful to all the women who are taking part in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life.

"They are making an invaluable contribution by raising money to fund research by our doctors, nurses and scientists."

She added: "The atmosphere at Race for Life is amazing. It is a very moving event for everyone who takes part."

Cancer Research UK spends more than 3m each year in the North-East supporting the work of scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to curing cancer by understanding its causes and investigating how best to prevent and treat it.

There will be a mass aerobics warm-up at 10.45am and the walk will start at 11am.
