A NORTH Yorkshire man who has become Britain's first betting shop millionaire with a bet of just 50p was unaware of his win.

The William Hill customer placed the 50p bet on eight horses.

The man, who placed his bet in William Hill's branch in Thirsk has yet to claim his winnings.

But a William Hill spokesman said he had been told of his win in a branch at nearby Bedale this morning.

He said: "He came in to place five 50p accumulators and asked the staff to check his slip from yesterday.

"When he was told he had won £1m he went as white as a sheet and said 'I better go and let my wife know' and left the shop."

The bookmakers are now waiting to see when he turns up at Thirsk to collect his winnings.

The customer landed an eight-horse accumulator on Friday's races to land the million, which is bookmaker William Hills limit on horseracing.

The bookmaker says the winner is a regular in the Thirsk betting shop and places similar bets almost daily, although he has never come close to winning on an major scale before.

He has beaten odds of 2,000,000 to one to land the first ever betting shop million pound payout.
