A GRIEVING family have paid tribute to two young soldiers who died earlier this week.

Daniel Albanese, 19, and his younger brother Charles, 18, died late on Sunday in a car crash on the A1.

The brothers, from Manchester and both serving soldiers at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, were travelling northbound at about midnight near the A61 junction leading to Baldersby, near Thirsk, when their silver Peugeot hatchback left the carriageway and struck a tree.

Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement released by the family earlier today read: "Daniel and Charles were the youngest of 6 children. Daniel was the quiet one, although his cheeky grin left us wondering of the mischief behind it. Charles was the baby and the cheeky one.

"His smile would cheer up anyone and his sense of humour kept friends and family entertained.

"In terms of stature, their ambition and pride made them mature beyond their years, with a love of life, a sense of fun and above all a passion for the army. They provided inspiration, support and hope to all those they left behind, especially Mum, Dad, brothers Michael and James, sisters Jacqueline and Samantha who have lost their two best friends."

The brothers' commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Musgrave said: "The loss of Gunners Daniel and Charles Albanese is being deeply mourned in 5 Regiment Royal Artillery. They were due to serve together in 4/73 Battery. Daniel had just completed basic training and was reporting for duty. They were first rate soldiers, dedicated to their profession. Hence they both had volunteered for the prestigious and extremely testing Special Observation Post selection course. They worked hard from the start, enjoyed their too brief time in the army and earned the friendship of many comrades. We will collectively miss their constant good humour and selfless attitude.

"The Regiment has lost two fine young men. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family at this very difficult time."

Police officers have renewed their appeal for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. Anyone with any information should contact road policing officer, PC Graham Waller at Richmond Road Policing Group on 0845-60-60-247.
