Farmers delighted with success of dairy
MILK MEN: Jeff Barthram, left, and Nick Hugill, have set up a dairy business
MILK MEN: Jeff Barthram, left, and Nick Hugill, have set up a dairy business

TWO farmers who became fed-up of low milk prices are delighted with the success of their own dairy business.

Jeff Barthram and Nick Hugill launched Bonnie Hill Dairies to supply fresh local milk to shops and businesses.

The dairy is based at Mr Barthram's farm at Great Broughton, near Stokesley, North Yorkshire. It aims to supply the customer within 48 hours of the cow being milked.

The pair will deliver milk and cream anywhere between Middlesbrough and Nor-thallerton, but would consider travelling further depending on the size of order.

The two decided to launch the venture last year, when the farmgate price had plummeted to less than 17p per litre - way below the cost of production.

It has since risen to about 25p a litre, but the huge hike in feed, energy and fuel costs means it is still barely profitable.

Mr Barthram said: "We launched in October and are very pleased with the way it has gone.

"The idea is that our milk will be with the customer within 48 hours of coming out of the cow - is about as fresh as you can get."

With many dairy companies collecting from farms every other day - and some considering every third day - a lot of milk can be days old before it hits supermarket shelves.

The men, whose wives, Nicki and Gill, are involved in the business, are deliberately targeting businesses, shops and hotels so they do not affect existing household doorstep deliveries.

The dairy, which has its own delivery van, supplies milk and cream three times a week. It can be contacted on 01642- 778297 or email inglehowherd@aol.com
