AN assistant rural surveyor with George F White has been named top student by his former college.

Richard Garland, 28, pictured, gained his MSc in rural estate management at the Royal Agricultural College, in Cirencester.

Now he has been awarded the Harker Silver Medal after being named top student out of 40 on his course.

His dissertation - entitled "The impact of climate change on agriculture"

- was viewed as groundbreaking and featured heavily in George F White's presentation at the North Sheep 2007 event in Weardale, earlier in the year.

Mr Garland, who is based in the firm's Alnwick office, said: "I was delighted to learn I had been awarded the medal.

"It was fantastic to be rewarded in such a way for the hard work I put in while studying."

He said his job had allowed him to put much of his theory into practice, and get real "on the ground" experience.

His goal for next year is to qualify as a chartered surveyor.

Hugh Fell, managing partner, said: "He is extremely hard working and has a very bright future ahead of him, so we are proud to support him and have no doubt he will become a well-recognised figure in the agricultural industry in the not too distant future."
