AN ECONOMIC development expert who previously worked for Durham and North Yorkshire County Councils has been appointed as the new director of think-tank IPPR North.

Sarah Longlands takes over from Ed Cox, who is joining the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.

She has been a senior research fellow at IPPR North and is a former director of policy at the Centre for Local Economic Strategies.

She said: “I am looking forward to working with the team to build upon the strong foundations that have been established under Ed’s fantastic leadership over the last eight and a half years.

“The need for organisations like IPPR North is more urgent than ever and I am particularly keen that it speaks on behalf of the people and places that have so far been left out of the Northern Powerhouse debate.”

IPPR North campaigns for greater powers for the North and a stronger regional economy.
