FABIO CAPELLO last night quit as England manager only hours after Harry Redknapp, the favourite to succeed him, was cleared of being a tax cheat.
On a day of high drama for English football, Capello stood down after a row with the Football Association for stripping John Terry of the captaincy.
Capello’s shock decision was announced after crisis talks with FA chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne.
The Italian had disagreed with FA’s decision to remove Terry from the England captaincy until after his July court case, when he will deny racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.
Spurs boss Redknapp immediately became the redhot favourite to be the next England manager after he was acquitted of tax fraud.
Under-pressure FA chiefs, who will now have to make a replacement before this summer’s European Championships, will hold a press conference at noon today.
Redknapp last night received strong support for the job. Other names in the frame included Roy Hodgson, Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink. But Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill, whose name was also mentioned, ruled himself out.
England Under-21s manager Stuart Pearce is expected to be put in temporary charge for the next international, a friendly against Holland, on February 29 at Wembley.

Fabio was sacked by a bunch of FA managers who know nothing about football and what makes it tick, and are out of touch with the supporters, the Man Utd & Chelsea managers, and many more footballing people.
The FA have brought the game into a state of anarchy in the run up to a major tournament. They should hang their heads in shame.
Good luck to the next English, England manager - Pearce, Redknapp or Pardew.
COME ON ENGLAND!
