Police seek mystery man after shopkeeper robbed

A MYSTERY man came to the rescue of a shopkeeper who was robbed as she was taking cash to the post office.

The man chased after the robber, struggled with him, and managed to grab the bag containing the cash.

Police are trying to trace the good Samaritan who left the scene before officers arrived.

The incident happened at 5.20pm, on Monday, as the manager of a shop in Beveridge Way, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, took cash to the nearby post office.

A man in a hooded top ran past her, pushed her and grabbed the bag containing the cash.

A passer-by who saw what happened chased after the suspect, struggled with him and recovered the bag with the cash still inside.

It was returned it to the shopkeeper and then taken to the post office as police were alerted.

The robber is described as possibly in his late teens and was wearing a black or blue hooded top with a face mask covering his mouth and nose.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "We are anxious to trace the good Samaritan and we are asking him to get in touch. We are also anxious to trace witnesses to the incident."
