THEIR slogan is 'Every little helps' and that was certainly the case for a young boy who could not afford a toy he had set his heart on during a visit to Tesco.

Five-year-old Harry Charlton had been taken to the supermarket as a treat with his father, Gary Charlton, who told his son he could choose something for £10.

After arriving in the Durham Road store, in Stockton, little Harry soon chose a Nerf gun to add to his toy collection.

However, when a member of staff told the youngster the foam dart shooting toy was over budget, it looked as though Harry would go without his treat.

Mr Charlton said: “Unfortunately, the Nerf gun had no price on it as someone had picked it up and then dumped it in a random place.

“I asked someone in Tesco if they could price check it for me as I was only looking to spend £10 since it’s getting close to Christmas and didn’t want to get anything too big.

“The man went away and checked and came back to tell us it was £12.97 and even though Harry is only five, he knew it was too much and got a bit upset.

“But the guy asked my son to put his hands out and he put the Nerf gun in one and £2.97 in the other.

“It might seem incredibly small to some people or a nice little gesture, but it he needs recognition for what he’s done.”

The kind-hearted member of staff was identified as Wayne Gibson, who has since been praised by his employees for the generous act.

A Tesco spokesperson told The Northern Echo: “Colleagues at our Stockton store work hard to serve customers a little better every day and Wayne is no exception.

“He’s a real credit to our business and we’re delighted he was able to help our customer.”
