The Northern Echo:

Juxtaposition, Contemporary Printmakers exhibition, Zillah Bell Gallery, Thirsk, opens on Saturday and runs until June 4
This new exhibition celebrates the infinite possibilities of printmaking through the differing approaches of some of today’s most important painters and printmakers, both established and emerging. In varying subject matter and media, abstract and representational works contrast landscapes of unadulterated nature with those showing evidence of human interruption. Barbara Rae CBE RA Internationally lauded Royal Academician Barbara Rae, painter and printmaker, has major work in public collections including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The British Museum, National Museum in Washington, The Dublin City Gallery, and many private collections. Emma Stibbon addresses environments that are in a condition of flux or change, currently the Arctic Circle and Volcanic regions. Public collections include the Victoria and Albert Museum, the University of Cambridge and the Stadtmuseum, Berlin. Katherine Jones Using collagraph, intaglio, aquatint and block print Katherine Jones’s translucent gradations of colour convey atmosphere and an unexplainable emanating glow. She was recently awarded The London Original Print Fair Prize, Royal Academy of Arts and the Printmaking Today Prize. In addition to their prints, paintings by Fred Cuming and fellow Royal Academician Mali Morris will also be on view in the downstairs gallery. Fred Cuming RA In 1974, Fred Cuming was the youngest ever artist to be elected to the Royal Academy. Important collections include Her Majesty’s Royal Collection and the National Portrait Gallery. Mali Morris RA Mali Morris’s paintings engage the viewer in the contemplation of pure abstraction. Morris has held over 30 solo shows worldwide and is represented in many private and public collections, including Arts Council England, Contemporary Arts Society, Museum of Wales, Cardiff, and Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. Amongst other printmakers who will be exhibiting are master printmakers Kip Gresham from Cambridge Print Studio, Ian McNicol from Glasgow Print Studio and Emma Lawrenson, winner of the New Light Printmakers Prize 2015. Exhibition curated by Sarah Greenslade. 01852-522479.

Exhibition of watercolours by Pamela Crawford, The Station, Richmond, opens on Saturday and runs until May 18
Original watercolours inspired by the landscapes, plants and butterflies of Richmondshire and the Dales, plus mounted giclee prints of wild flowers.
"Originally from London, I have lived most of my life in Yorkshire with my family and late husband. We loved walking on the Yorkshire Moors, and in recent years, in the Dales countryside.
My love of painting began when very young, encouraged by my artistic mother, and has continued all my life. Self-taught, I began with oils and pastels but my real passion is for watercolour. I enjoy the translucent qualities of the paint, the way it allows my intricate drawing to show through and the possibilities for building up subtle colours and textures, often reminiscent of layered tissue paper. Watercolour can be an unpredictable medium, so I always look forward to the happy accidents which can sometimes be just what's needed."
Pamela Crawford, will be painting at The Station on Saturday 7 and Sunday May 8 between 10am and 4pm. Come along and find out more about her inspiration and her work.

Sounds Of The Glenn Miller Era, Forum Theatre, Billingham, on Sunday, 7.30pm
The lights soften, the mood settles. An audience waits for that first moment of sound. The Big Band is poised, relaxed, but with eyes anxious for the lead. And then, as if giving body to an echo, the murmured notes of ‘Moonlight Serenade’…and the night, it seems, is suddenly full and timeless. There are those who watch and listen who tap a shy finger to the melodies, others who follow with a silent foot-beat, still others who murmur softly through the lyrics, and those who simply permit a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories. Recapture the sounds of a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents ‘an unmissable evening of music and song’ – the Classic Big Band Sound of the 1940s. 01642-552663.
