A BAND of wintry weather left parts of the region covered in snow today (April 29).

Sleet and snow caused disruption to motorists with a number of weather-related collisions in the north of England.

As temperatures struggled to reach six degrees and with the Met Office recording around 2-3cm of snow, the unseasonal cold snap has sparked a warning from police to take extra caution on the roads ahead of the May Day bank holiday weekend.

And it is not over yet as forecasters have predicted further snow, sleet and hail as May approaches.

Tomorrow (Saturday) temperatures could reach around 11 degrees with a bright but cold start followed by sunny spells and a scattering of showers.

Sunday is expected to be cloudier with outbreaks of rain and a brisk south westerly wind developing later on.

And those hoping to enjoy Bank Holiday Monday can expect rain to clear in the morning for a brighter day with sunny spells and a risk of showers.

Temperatures could make it to 13 degrees on Sunday and Monday.
