A LEGAL team proved it has what it takes to win after taking on an Army-style assault course to raise money for children with Down Syndrome.

Partners, solicitors, representatives and support staff from Hewitts took part in Armageddon III, a challenging charity fund raiser earlier this year.

The day-long challenge, held at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club, saw teams pitched against each other in a series of endurance tests, such as commando duels and stretcher chariot races.

Staff from the law firm's four offices in Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Stockton all took part.

Partner Darren Brown said: “It was an intense experience, pushing us to the limit, but it was all for a very good cause and everyone enjoyed themselves.”

He said the aches and pains everyone felt after the event were worth it in the end because the team’s efforts raised £1,500 in sponsorship money for such a worthwhile cause, the Education Centre for Children with Down Syndrome (ECCDS).

ECCDS provides educational and social experiences for children with Down Syndrome, from birth to 18-years-old, at centres in Newton Aycliffe, Hexham and Prudhoe.

Staff also work with parents to help them acquire the essential skills they need to face the future with confidence.

Mr Brown visited the charity’s headquarters in Carers Way, Newton Aycliffe, recently where he handed over a cheque to four-year-old pupil Grace Armstrong.

He said: “We are all delighted to be fund raising for such a worthwhile charity that makes such a difference to people’s lives.”

ECCDS founder and teacher Maggie Hart said: “The money raised by Hewitts will be used to provide sensory resources for our children as well as going towards activities and general running costs for each of our groups.”
