A CHARITY which helps children who struggle with reading is in desperate need of volunteers.

Beanstalk, the national children’s literacy charity, is looking for volunteers from across the North-East.

The charity provides trained reading helpers to work in schools to try and make sure every child leaves able to read.

Each Beanstalk reading helper supports three children and see each child for two minute sessions a week, during term-time, for three terms.

In the last school year, it is estimated more than 2,500 North East children left primary school unable to read to the required level, which can have severe consequences for their future,

Emma Rose, Beanstalk’s recruitment and training executive based in Newton Aycliffe, said: “Volunteering as a Beanstalk reading helper is extremely rewarding, makes a lasting difference to children’s lives and is a great way to give something back to your local community.”
