A STRETCH of the A1 is to be closed overnight on Friday (August 14).
The northbound A1 through Gateshead will be closed from junction 68 for Lobley Hill to junction 69 for A184 Gateshead Quays from 8pm on Friday to 9am on Saturday.
The southbound A1 from junction 69 to junction 68 and the A184 westbound will also be closed at the same time.
Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said: “This work is necessary to complete the gantry work which began last weekend.
“We’re advising people to allow extra time for their journeys when the closures are taking place, although we’ve deliberately timed the work to be carried out when traffic levels are at their lowest.”
Diversions will be in place and signposted.
Work on the £61m improvement scheme to the A1 between Coal House and the Metro Centre is expected to be finished by next spring, widening four miles of the A1 to three lanes in both directions.
