PET owners in the North-East are the most generous with their animal companions, according to research.

A new report by credit card company Capital One has revealed that animal-loving Brits spend £3.4bn each year showering their pets with presents – with each owner spending an average of £264 a year on gifts for their pets.

Pet owners in the North-East are the most generous, with two thirds saying that they regularly purchase non-essential items for their pets, more than anywhere else in the UK.

According to the report, 36 per cent of pets in the North-East are treated to spa-style treatments and toiletries, while almost a quarter are bought designer clothing and accessories every month.

The list of treats ranges from the affordable to the extravagant with the most expensive items people buy their animals ranging from a £600 mink coat, to a £1,400 foldable pet treadmill and even a £3,500 doggy watch.
