A PRIVATE memorial service in honour of two devoted football fans has been held at the stadium where they spent some of their happiest times.

Friends John Alder, 63, and Liam Sweeney, 28, were travelling to New Zealand to watch their beloved Newcastle United play in a pre-season tour when they were killed one year ago as flight MH17 was brought down in Ukraine.

The club created a memorial outside St James' Park for the men whose memories have been kept alive by fans applauding in the 17th minute of every game.

It was attended by family and friends including, Liam's father Barry and John’s sister, Joyce Robbins.

Wendy Taylor, spokesman for Newcastle United, said: “As a club we wanted to remember Liam and John who are always in our thoughts and will always be missed by everyone associated with Newcastle United.”

This morning, club legend Bob Moncur laid two wreaths at the memorial garden and flags were flown at half mast from the stadium roof.

The Magpies are currently in California, preparing for Saturday’s game against Sacramento Republic when all their players will wear black arm bands in memory of the two fans.

They also held a minutes silence to remember the men during a training session today.

Ms Taylor: “It was private special ceremony that was conducted at the memorial garden this morning. It was very touching to see some of the many tributes that were laid.”
