THE North-East wants more powers over its own affairs, according to the leader of the region’s “super council”.

Simon Henig, leader of Durham County Council and chair of the North East Combined Authority (Neca), was speaking after hundreds of people attended a series of consultation events on Neca’s case for greater devolution to the region from Whitehall.

Talks have also been held with North-East MPs and Lords.

Councillor Henig said feedback had been “very supportive”.

“We believe that together we make a powerful case for the North-East and that we can make a real difference in terms of how decisions affecting our area are made,” he added.

Neca wants powers over economic development, transport and skills.

“All of the comments we have received will now be taken into consideration as we develop our final proposals for discussion with the Government,” Cllr Henig said.

Almost 300 people attended seven events between March 12 and 26.

No announcement on devolution is expected until after the General Election, but both Labour and the Conservatives are committed to giving greater powers to combined authorities.

Neca covers seven council areas, stretching from the Scottish border to the Tees.
