CAKE LOVERS in the North-East have named the Bakewell tart as their favourite sweet treat, according to a new poll.
Yorkshire’s loyal dessert fans didn’t stray far from home when they picked Yorkshire curd tart as their top treat.
The poll, conducted as part of the recent Craft Bakers’ Week, saw the humble Eccles cake crowned the nation’s number one regional bake.
The region’s favourite, Bakewell tart, came in second while the Chelsea bun took third place.
Commenting on the findings, Keith Houliston, chairman of Craft Bakers’ Week said: “What this research tells us is that the UK’s bakers are playing a key role in preserving and keeping traditional regional specialities available for people to enjoy.
“Many of the cakes and buns being enjoyed today originate from hundreds of years ago and we’d like to encourage everyone to support their local baker and help keep this fantastic tradition alive.”
