TWO long-serving councillors were presented with a rare honour last night.

Former Darlington borough councillors Clifford Giles Hutchinson and Sheila Mary Brown were made honorary aldermen at a council meeting yesterday.

Mr Hutchinson was a Labour councillor for 44 years in Darlington, and served on the county council for six years.

He served on the housing committee, planning committee and resources scrutiny committee.

Mrs Brown was a councillor for the Conservatives for 41 years in Darlington and 24 years at county hall.

She served on several committees including education, environment, planning and police.

Both also served as mayors.

Mayor Councillor Marian Swift presented them with scrolls to mark the occasion.

Council leader John Williams said: "This is a very special occasion, not just for the two distinguished individuals, Clifford and Sheila, but a special occasion for the council and for the town. It is a very rarely bestowed honour."

Only Alderman Jim Skinner has been previously given the award by the borough council.

Councillor Heather Scott, leader of the Conservative group, who seconded the proposals, said: "Thank you both very much for the long service you have given this council.

"It gets into your blood. After a certain time you just cannot give it up."
