Appeal for missing man to come forward
Alan Snowball and his late wife
Alan Snowball and his late wife

POLICE in County Durham are appealing for a pensioner who has gone missing from home to contact his family to assure them he is safe.

The disappearance of 78-year-old Alan Snowball, of Mellanby Crescent, Newton Aycliffe, has just been reported to police, but he has not been seen by his family for about four weeks.

Mr Snowball is fond of the Blackpool area and on previous occasions has gone to stay in the town without informing relatives of his intentions.

He is also said to have a link with Glasgow.

Before he retired Mr Snowball, a widower since his wife Jean died four years ago, worked at the Hydro Polymers factory, in Newton Aycliffe.

Inspector Martin Peace said: "Although Mr Snowball has gone missing before he hasn't previously been away for such a long period.

"We are concerned for his well-being. He is an elderly man with a heart condition and it is feared he might be sleeping rough somewhere."

Inspector Peace is urging Mr Snowball to contact police and his family to let them know he is safe and well.

The missing man is of medium build, clean shaven with short, white hair.

The middle finger on his right hand is curled back and he is unable to straighten it. When last seen he was wearing a white shirt bearing blue horizontal stripes, grey trousers and brown shoes.

He wears square gold-rimmed glasses, a gold-coloured watch and a yellow gold wedding band.

Anyone with information about Mr Snowball's whereabouts should contact Newton Aycliffe police on 0845-60-60-365.
