The accident happened at around 11.18 this morning as the man and woman were walking across Redheugh Bridge, Newcastle.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said it received a report from the ambulance service that the pair had been hit by a filing cabinet falling from, what a witness described asm, a passing white flat-bed van.
