ENTRIES are being invited for a prestigious regional chess tournament which offers a qualifying place to a major national event.
The 33rd County Durham Open Chess Congress takes place at Houghton Sports Centre, in Station Road, Houghton-le-Spring, on Wearside, between Friday and Sunday, March 16 - 18.
Staged by the Durham County Chess Association, it incorporates the Northern Counties Chess Union (NCCU) senior and junior individual championships.
It is also classed as a Grand Prix event by both the English Chess Federation and the NCCU.
There are various prize categories, including a chance to qualify for the British Championship, with games played from 6.30 - 10pm, on the Friday, and between 10am and 5.45pm on the Saturday and Sunday.
Players from North Yorkshire, Teesside, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland are expected to take part, with some travelling from further afield.
