COMMUTERS across the region faced long delays this morning after a major car accident and chaos on the railways.
A man was cut free from his car and taken to hospital after colliding with two other vehicles on the A1 southbound at 8.28am.
The crash, which left the car on its roof, closed the dual carriageway at the Angel of the North at Gateshead and led to major tailbacks on minor roads in the area.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police, which is investigating, said: “The A1 northbound was closed so the air ambulance could land and take an injured man to hospital.”
Signal problems on the East Cast Mainline at Ouston, near Chester-le-Street, affected services run by Transpennine Express, Cross Country, Northern Rail and East Coast between 8.30am and 10am.
An East Cast spokesman said: “We had delays for about an hour on one of two services and we had to stop and start some services at Darlington and Newcastle.”

There were plenty of rude drivers, and many more using their phones while driving! The police would have had a field-day just walking between the stationary cars.
Hope all involved are fine.
