FOUR people remained in police custody today as inquiries continued into the unexplained death of a man found unconscious in a street.

Paramedics and police were called to Rudyard Street, in North Shields, North Tyneside, where they came across the casualty, who was suffering critical head injuries, shortly before 2am yesterday.

He was taken to North Tyneside General Hospital where, despite the efforts of medical staff, he was declared dead several hours later.

Police said today that a post-mortem examination conducted later yesterday confirmed the victim died from internal haemorrhaging.

He is believed to be in his 40s, but has not been named by police.

Detectives were continuing their investigation today to try to establish the full circumstances behind the man's injuries which caused his death.

Four people arrested yesterday were still in police custody today helping inquiries today.

Anyone with information is asked to ring the Northumbria force, on 03456 043043.
