NEWCASTLE United footballer Andy Carroll was yesterday charged by police as a result of an alleged nightclub assault.
The 21-year-old was arrested after an incident at popular Newcastle city centre nightspot Blu Bambu, in the Bigg Market, in the early hours of Monday, December 7.
He answered bail at a Newcastle police station yesterday to be charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
England U21 player Carroll, who lives in Prestwick, near Newcastle, was bailed to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court this month.
When news of his arrest emerged in December, United manager Chris Hughton said the club would deal with the matter in-house.
Mr Carroll has continued to play in the intervening period and scored twice in a man-ofthe- match performance in the Magpies’ 5-1 win against Cardiff City on Friday.
Hughton said yesterday that Carroll would be in the squad for tonight’s game away to Derby.
He said: “The most important thing for him is to concentrate on his football.”
