YOUNG Newcastle footballer Andy Carroll was today charged by police as a result of an alleged nightclub assault.
It follows the arrest of the United player after an incident at a popular Newcastle city centre night spot in December.
The 21-year-old striker was alleged to have been involved in a glassing incident at the Blu Bambu, in the Bigg Market, in the early hours of Monday December 7.
He answered bail at a Newcastle police station today to be informed that he had been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The England under-21 international was bailed to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court to face the charge later this month.
A short statement issued by Northumbria Police said simply: "Andrew Carroll, 21, of Prestwick, Newcastle, has today been charged with assault following an incident at the Blu Bambu nightclub, in Newcastle, in the early hours of December 7.
"He will appear on Thursday February 25, at Newcastle Magistrates' Court,."
When news of his arrest emerged in December United manager Chris Hughton merely said the club would deal with the matter, "in house".
Mr Carroll has continued to play in the intervening period and scored twice in a man-of-the-match performance in the Magpies 5-1 win against Cardiff City last Friday.
