RESIDENTS had to be evacuated after a fire destroyed a flat and spread to a neighbouring home.

The blaze overnight in the Ladyport Green area of Stockton, involved up to 30 firefighters at its height.

Cleveland Fire Service said a first floor flat was destroyed by the fire, which spread through the roof to a home next door.

No-one was in the flat at the time, but dozens of adjoining residents were evacuated for their own safety. No injuries were reported.

A joint investigation has now begun involving the fire service and Cleveland Police.

Watch manager Mick Ireland, from Stockton fire station, said: “When we arrived there was fire coming out of the windows.

“It was well developed and at first we also thought there was someone in, but fortunately that was not the case.

“It was all hands on deck.”

A 999 call was made at about 1.20am with firefighters staying at the scene until just before 5am. Eight sets of breathing apparatus, hose reels and a hydraulic ladder were used.

The occupier of the flat was alerted and returned to see it going up in flames. It is understood the housing provider Thirteen is involved in re-homing some of those affected.

A neighbour, Jim Gardner said people were standing around in tears.

He also described firefighters who tackled the fire as “heroic”.

Posting on Facebook he said: “I’m in shock. Police hurriedly moved people back. The roof was entirely ablaze.

“Been stood outside wondering if anyone made it out alive, but luckily both residents were out at the time.

“There are some good people around here and all are safe.”
