A TEESSIDE politician has vowed to fight for the NHS as he celebrated being appointed to Labour’s health select committee.

Dr Paul Williams, MP for Stockton South, said he would work to protect and improve the health service while serving on the committee.

The GP also hopes to focus on care for people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health problems and says he will strive to reduce health inequalities.

Dr Williams, who has served as a CCG leader and the chief executive of a GP federation, said: “I’m honoured to have been chosen by Labour colleagues to serve on the health select committee where I’ll be fighting to protect and improve our health service.

“I will use the position to try and reduce health inequalities and influence a strategic shift towards prevention and non-medical ways of improving health as well as supporting NHS staff.”

He said he would also focus on “getting the first 1,000 days of life right for everyone.”
