A MAN was this evening airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries following an accident involving two cars in Thornaby.

The man, in his 40s, suffered injuries to his head, chest, pelvic area and legs as well as internal bleeding.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called to Millbank Lane, near its junction with Thorntree Road, following the 5.40pm accident.

The North East Ambulance Service was already in attendence. The GNAAS doctor-led trauma team assessed and treated the injured man and he was flown to James Cook University Hospital within five minutes.

The condition of the man, who was driving a dark blue BMW 320 convertible, was described as critical.

Cleveland Police said that the driver of the other car involved, a blue Vauxhall Corsa, suffered minor injuries.

"Police want to trace the driver of a black Volkswagen Golf which was following the BMW."
