A PAIR of heroic police officers who saved the lives of two men who were stabbed and bleeding to death after a violent street attack are set to be recognised for their bravery.

PC Tom McGarry and PC John Jenkinson were the first officers on the scene after a fight broke out on December 1, 2015, on Low Grange Avenue, Billingham.

The Cleveland Police officers were in a race against time to save the men with one of the victims left with an open heart wound while the other was suffering with a stab wound to the abdomen.

Both PCs used first aid to stem the heavy flow of blood from each victim ahead of the arrival of the Great North Air Ambulance Service and the North-East Ambulance Service.

The officers who have been credited by paramedics as “undoubtedly” saving the lives of both men have since been nominated for a national Police Bravery Award hosted by the Police Federation of England and Wales.

Cleveland Police Federation chair, Andrea Breeze, said: “Even whilst desperately trying to save their lives the officers managed to ascertain the circumstances of this incident and locate the weapons used.

“Due to their quick thinking and actions, the lives of both men were saved and vital evidence was recovered.

“These actions are worthy of national recognition at the national Police Bravery Awards.”

Three men were arrested following the incident and the pair who were stabbed were both taken for emergency surgeries at James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

The man with a chest wound underwent multiple operations while the victim stabbed in the abdomen had his spleen removed following extensive internal bleeding.

Stephen Mann, chief executive of Police Bravery Award sponsors, Police Mutual, said: “I am always astounded by police officers’ acts of bravery and my colleagues and I continue to be inspired by their dedication.

“They are a true inspiration and I feel privileged and humbled to be part of the Awards again.”

The overall winners will be announced next month.
