A MAN died after being hit by a car on the A174 near Middlesbrough in the early hours of Monday morning.

Cleveland Police confirmed that a male pedestrian, believed to be in his 30s, died at the scene after being knocked down by a Skoda Fabia about 200 metres west of the A1044 Low Lane intersection, at 4.15am.

The westbound carriageway of the A174 was closed while inquiries took place.

Shortly after 8am a spokesman for Cleveland and Durham Road Policing Unit wrote on Facebook: "Police are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision which occurred in the early hours of this morning on the A174 in Middlesbrough.

"The westbound carriageway of the A174 will not reopen at 8am as anticipated as further enquiries need to be carried out.

"The road will remain closed between the B1365 (Blue Bell/Hemlington) and the A19 until further notice.

"Officers are working to reopen the road as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience whilst enquiries are being conducted."

Motorists experienced delays on routes around the A174

The accident caused major delays for motorists on the routes around the A174 with some describing the roads as 'gridlocked'.

All roads out of Nunthorpe were nose to tail and routes around Coulby Newham and Hemlington were heavily congested as a result.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police posted on Facebook shortly after 10am: "A174 Westbound has now reopened.

"There may be some delays in the area, please allow extra time for your journey. Thank you for your patience."
