A MAN has been spared jail for a shove outside a nightspot which left a woman with a broken hip.

Halmat Adnan was said to have overreacted when the victim, who like the defendant was sheltering on the main entrance doorstep from heavy rain, pushed him initially outside.

CCTV footage showed 26-year-old Adnan then shoving the woman, propelling her across a small courtyard and causing her to fall.

The victim spent several days in hospital and required a hip replacement operation following the attack outside Trader Jacks pub, in Stockton town centre, at about 12.40am on August 28 last year.

Adnan, who required an interpreter for his hearing at Teesside Crown Court, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm, but claimed to remember nothing of the incident as he had been drinking.

In a statement the victim said she now had to use a wheelchair or crutches as she could not walk unaided and also suffered from depression.

She said: “The incident has left me feeling worthless and that my life is over.”

Nicci Horton, mitigating, said Adnan, of Londonderry Road, Stockton, had expressed remorse and she described it as an isolated incident. He also had no previous convictions.

Judge Tony Briggs said Adnan had overreacted to what may have been initially a mild practical joke.

He said: “The overreaction from you has had serious consequences. She [the victim] was undoubtedly seriously injured. However I am quite satisfied that you did not intend to cause serious harm.”

Adnan received a 12 month jail sentence, suspended for two years, from the judge.
