A STUDENT has reached the next stage of a popular TV talent show.

Craig Carter has reached the live knockout rounds of ITV’s The Voice UK.

The 29-year-old from Billingham impressed the judges, including his own mentor Gavin Rossdale, with his performance of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition.

He was chosen ahead of fellow competitor Tanya in the Battle Round of the competition, but the 31-year-old R&B artist still progressed after being “stolen” by coach will.i.am.

Mr Carter, who is currently studying Performing Arts at Stockton Riverside College, said there were “no words” to describe how it felt to get through.

“To get recognition from an audience of that calibre, it is just unbelievable,” he said.

“I got picked and Tanya was stolen so it couldn’t have worked out better for both of us.

“I just want to get as much from this experience as I can.

“I am so grateful for every bit of help and support that I have had so far. The messages of support I have received have been incredible,” he added.

The Voice sees singers perform blind auditions to four celebrity coaches.

If the celebrities, all recording artists, turn their chairs it shows they are interested in working with that contestant and they go through to the next round of the show.
