A COUNCILLOR’S social media post making serious allegations against a councillor has been reported to police.

Independent Middlesbrough councillor Terry Lawton issued the serious allegations on his personal page on Tuesday morning.

The former Labour Party member, who represents Brambles and Thorntree ward, was kicked out of the party last year following complaints about previous social media postings.

In his latest posting, Cllr Lawton says that the serious allegations are anecdotal but says ‘that was also the problem with exposing Jimmy Savile’.

Middlesbrough Council has been made aware of the posting and reported its contents to Cleveland Police.

A council spokesman said: “As soon as we became aware of these allegations, we sought legal advice and have referred the matter to Cleveland Police.

“The Councillor concerned has been offered guidance on his use of social media, and we would urge him to take any evidence he has to the police immediately.

“The Mayor and Executive will offer their full support to any investigation, and would also urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.”
