PEOPLE in Stockton are coming together to make a difference this Christmas by supporting the town’s elderly with a community-led festive tea party.

The ‘Cup of Festive Kindness’ campaign was launched by the town's Castlegate Shopping Centre last month to promote social inclusion among the elderly.

It is one of the largest collaborative campaigns, uniting charities, service providers and local businesses.

The public have been encouraged to donate raffle prizes and goods to food banks in the run-up to the vintage themed tea party.

Organisers are also appealing for talented local singers and musicians who can belt out songs and music from yesteryear.

Carers and residential care providers are being urged to sign up those they care for.

Stockton Mayor Ken Dixon is encouraging residents to get involved and said: "We are lucky to have such a strong community spirit across Stockton Borough. I call on people to get behind this campaign and show the spirit of giving and care at this special time of year.”

Big names backing the campaign include Greggs, Endeavour Partnership, Marks & Spencer and Yorkshire Bank.

Party guests will include representatives from The Royal British Legion, Age UK, North Star Housing Group and Wellburn House while free transport will be provided by coach company, Compass Royston.

The event will take place at Preston Park Museum and Grounds on December 13. Attendance is free but places must be booked.

Care Homes and Activity Co-ordinators for the elderly are asked to contact Max Freer on 01642 723787 for further information.

Donations will go to Billingham/Stockton Food Bank to be distributed across the Christmas period. The last collection will be 5pm Saturday 17thDecember.
