POLITICAL opponents came together in Stockton last night (Wednesday, October 19) in a rare show of unity to back an anti-racism campaign.

The Stockton boprough councillors all wore an item of red clothing and met with former Middlesbrough FC player, Curtis Fleming, to support the Show Racism the Red Card drive to reduce racism in football.

The town centre and Riverside were awash with red as the unique event lighting was specially programmed to change colour in promote the 'wear red' fundraising event which takes place tomorrow.FRI

The anti-racism educational Show Racism the Red Card charity uses the high-profile of football and players to help tackle racism in society and delivers training to more than 50,000 people every year.

The councillors were also joined by David Foster from the charity at the fountains on Stockton High Street before a meeting of the full council.

Bob Cook, leader of Stockton Borough Council, said: “The charity has done marvellous work in combating racism over the years and this has been mirrored by the great work done in Stockton borough led by Councillor Norma Stephenson and I’d like to thank her for helping to organise this event.

“We’re asking everyone to wear something red on Friday, October 21 and to give a small donation if they can. The fundraising will help Show Racism the Red Card to continue to deliver their awareness raising and anti-racism education here in Stockton borough and across the United Kingdom.”
