A TROUPE of Massai warriors showed off their skills during a display inside a church.

Seven members of the Osilligi group called into Yarm Parish Church in Sunday as part of a national tour.

They demonstrated how the Maasai hunted with spears and songs of hope, thanks and praise.

Members of the congregation at St Mary Magdalene were encouraged to try the warriors distinctive jumping, where they are able to leap three feet in the air from a standing start without bending their knees.

Freya Holman said: “I was scared at first but proud to be standing in front of 200 people with the Maasai. I will go home and practice my jumping.”

The group, who are half way through a two month tour, took part in a question and answer session when they spoke of how there was practically non existent within the Maasai.

The congregation heard how members had learned English through the visits, listening and speaking with people. One members explained that they do not use musical accompaniment, just the human voice. However, they do have a horn from the Kudu antelope for ceremonial purposes and to communicate between villages.
