A TOWN centre which has undergone a multi-million pound transformation is in the running to be named High Street of the year.

And small business in Stockton are hopeful that the £38m investment in the town centre will help to win the coveted prize.

The Great British High Street of the Year competition celebrates the nation’s best towns, villages and cities.

The shortlist of finalists will be announced in October, and Stockton’s Business Improvement District (BID) believes it is in with a real chance of winning.

Chairwoman of the Stockton BID (Business Improvement District) Janice Auton of Poppy’s Hairdressing believes the town is in with a good chance of success.

“The wonderful combination of small retail, independent shops and nationally recognised chains allows us to work with a huge cross section of businesses, all of whom have the passion and drive to make Stockton a success,” she said.

“Stockton High Street has a fabulous heritage, beautiful riverside, great transport links and shopping, all complimented by the fantastic events programme which give businesses the opportunity to get involved.”

The town centre being transformed with the new road layout and specially designed fountain feature.

Stockton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Cllr Nigel Cooke said town centre is also an ideal setting for ‘world-class’ events such as Stockton International Riverside Festival.

The shortlist is announced on October 18 when members of the public will be asked to vote for their favourite.
