“STOCKTON should be hugely proud” – that was the view of newly crowned British time trial champion Alex Dowsett after sealing victory on the streets of the Teesside town.
It was Dowsett’s fifth title and while he was happy to accept the praise for his achievement, he was also keen to hand out some plaudits of his own.
Thursday’s time trials – which featured three British Cycling national championships for U23 men, women and the men and was part of the four-day Stockton Cycling Festival – took in the streets of the newly regenerated town centre, as well as the nearby riverside.
It was a demanding course, made even more challenging by the hot weather.
That did, however, ensure a good crowd throughout the day and old and young, enthusiasts and just the plain curious packed the route.
Said Dowsett: “What a great event. The whole town centre aspect of the time trial was something quite incredible.
“The atmosphere as you came into the town was really great, even out of the town there was a lot of people watching. The course was super spectator-friendly and so Stockton should be really proud of what they have put on today.”
The festival continues with youth racing tonight (FRI), Sportive rides on Saturday and climaxes with the road races on Sunday. All are supported by a variety of cycling-related events. For more details visit http://events.stockton.gov.uk/stockton-events/stockton-cycling-festival-2/
