A "MINI tornado" has been spotted in the skies over parts of the region.
Retired detective Shane Sellers, a member of The Northern Echo's camera club, spotted the mini twister hovering over Yarm from his home in Egglescliffe just before lunchtime today (Sunday, May 22) and captured the phenomenon.
He said: "It became very dark all of a sudden so I went outside to see what the issue was and noticed this funnel cloud starting to form over Yarm."
Funnel clouds are caused by winds at different altitudes blowing at two different speeds . If the cloud touches the ground due to the weight of rain or hail inside it, it becomes a tornado.
