THE former Mayor of Yarm and current vice-chairman at Yarm Town Council is upset at finding a play area and field vandalised and strewn with glass.

Yarm town councillor Jason Hadlow compared the scene at Willey Flats Field in the town to a "warzone" and has written to the chief executive of Stockton Borough Council to enquire about installing CCTVs.

Cllr Hadlow said: "I’ve never seen anything like it. The scene that greeted me was like something out of a war zone.

"I’ve only ever seen something like this on the TV. Whoever has done this must have used tools or earthmoving equipment.

"Someone must know who done it and I call on those people who know who was responsible to come forward with names, so that we can stop this ongoing wanton vandalism once and for all."

Cllr Hadlow has also emailed Neil Schneider, chief executive of Stockton council stating: "I have been to the site this morning and it is worse than Aleppo. The whole of Willey flats field is covered in detritus including glass.

"Now I’m not a great fan of CCTV, but something has to be done about this. Can you let me know how practical some sort of monitoring would be for this area?"

A spokeswoman for Stockton Council said: “We know many children enjoy using the play area so we are saddened to hear it has been vandalised.

"Although we do not have a budget for additional CCTV cameras across the borough we can advise on the suitability of the location, its likely effectiveness and cost. We also plan to increase Neighbourhood Enforcement Team patrols in the area.”
