A NEW Lidl supermarket to the south of Stockton will cost £2 million to build and and create up to 40 jobs, it has been revealed.

Stockton Borough Council's planning committee granted permission to Lidl to build a new supermarket at the former Nifco factory site on Yarm Road, Stockton to serve the communities of south Stockton, Ingleby Barwick, Yarm and Eaglescliffe.

The plans have attracted controversy because the supermarket chain wants to leave its town centre site at Wellington Square. However Lidl has stressed the company is in fact looking to open another new store to serve central Stockton.

And the company has now released details about the new standard Lidl-size building of 2,470sqm. There will be 146 parking spaces, wide aisles, glass front and a welfare area for employees.

The building will also be designed to reduce its environmental impact. The company said it will reduce the CO2 emission rate by more than 20 per cent when compared with a building of the same type, size and use by maximising energy efficiency.

The fully glass fronted façade maximises natural daylight entering the building, whilst sensor controlled exterior sun blinds automatically operate to mitigate the effects of unwanted heat.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, David Murphy said: “We look forward to getting started on construction.”

In the original planning application, Lidl's consultants proposed installing 'hydraulic atomisers' to pump out 'air freshener' consisting of 875 litres of water and 6.5litres of smell neutraliser made up of natural essential oils every hour.

The idea was to disguise the smell of a nearby slaughterhouse. However that aspect of the plan was not submitted to the planning committee last month.
