SIX Teessiders are getting on their bikes for the Royal British Legion, including one blind cyclist.

Craig Owens, Michael Caveney, Paul Docherty, Andrew Wrigley, Tina Harrison and Mary Gallagher, all from Teesside, have become Team Cameron and are in training for a gruelling 300 mile cycle ride from London to Paris in support of The Royal British Legion.

The team, who are all from either Billingham or Middlesbrough, have named themselves after sponsor Cameron's Brewery in Hartlepool and will join more than 270 other cyclists at Greenwich Park on Thursday, September 3 at the start of the charity’s 20th annual four-day Pedal to Paris bike ride to raise funds for the charity.

On the final day the Champs-Elysees will be closed to traffic to allow the cyclists to cross onto the Arc de Triomphe.

Two of the cyclists, Michael Caveney and Paul Docherty, who was blinded in an accident 24 years ago, have done the charity journey before in 2014. The friends cycled on a tandem and Mr Docherty became the first blind person to complete the cycle journey.

This time fundraisers have already raised £7,000 and are hoping to raise at least £8,500

Charles Byrne, Director of Fundraising at The Royal British Legion, said: “Apart from the training that goes into preparing for the event, the fundraising that they are undertaking on behalf of the Legion will help those we support live on to a more hopeful future.”

Apart from Cameron’s Brewery and Seatechs providing corporate sponsorship, other donations have come from North-East firms SG Petch, Cleveland Auto Refinishers, Treedom and PB
