A SUPERHERO took to the streets of Stockton (Thursday, August 20) today to spread the word of a charity changing lives on Teesside.

Dressed as Batman, Middlesbrough musician Jamie Sample visited the town ahead of a fundraising evening in aid of Inward Bound.

On Friday, September 25 The George pub in Stockton will be transformed into Gotham City as Batman and a cast of colourful characters join together to boost the charity’s funds.

An Arkham Night has been organised by Mr Sample to raise awareness of the organisation he credits with transforming his life.

The popular singer turned to the charity for help after struggling to deal with spiralling depression and anxiety.

Once outgoing, Mr Sample became increasingly introverted, started comfort-eating and eventually hung up his guitar, giving up on his passion.

Free well-being classes and support from the Middlesbrough-based charity got him back on his feet and he’s now determined to give something back.

The 35-year-old said: “Depression had a major impact on my life – I stopped making music and that’s a mark of how much darkness I had to deal with at the time.

“Inward Bound taught me how to deal with my problems without going to the doctor for a pill.

“They mean a lot to me and everyone else they help and I wanted to say thank you.”

He added: “My life’s great now, I’m dressed as Batman on Stockton High Street and that’s something I wouldn’t have been able to do.

“People keep asking me about Robin – I tell them we don’t talk about what happened to Robin.”

An Arkham Night will feature a raffle, alternative 80s disco and three live bands.

Admission is free, dressing up is encouraged and donations are welcome.
