A COUNCIL has issued a reminder to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians that Newport Bridge is set to be closed overnight as part of repainting works.

From Thursday (July 2) for up to three weeks, the A1032, which connects Stockton to Middlesbrough, will close between 8pm and 6am, so the existing scaffolding can be removed.

Once the scaffolding is down, the inside faces of the bridge arches can be repainted, which will require lane restrictions to be put in place until the end of August.

During this period the outside lanes will be closed but the inside lanes will remain open so that traffic can travel in both directions at all times. The existing 18 tonne weight restriction will also be lifted.

Stockton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor David Rose said: “We appreciate that the A1032 is a busy commuter road so we will make sure that the scaffolding is removed overnight when the road isn’t as busy.

“I’m pleased the works to the bridge are now nearly finished and look forward to seeing it once the final touches have been made.”

Access for cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained by keeping at least one footpath open throughout the works.
