BEES are the latest residents to be welcomed to a Teesside caravan site which has been named as a 2015 winner of the David Bellamy Conservation award.

Drovers Way Holiday Caravan Park in Elton village, near Stockton, has two new hives which owners Chris and Helen Brown, hope could provide accommodation for up to 100,000 bees this summer.

The gold level David Bellamy award has been achieved by the 10 acre site every year since it opened in 2010.

As well as trees and shrubs, the park’s woodland areas provide habitats for deer and badgers. Wildflowers attract butterflies and now honey bees and birds including kingfishers are drawn to its two fishing lakes.

Based on a farm which has been in Mr Brown's family since 1952, the park can hold up to 70 luxury holiday homes for private owners.

"We're very excited about our latest award, and it's great to know that David Bellamy is continuing to be so supportive of our work," said Mrs Brown.

"The honey bee project is something we're really looking forward to this year, and we've had fantastic help from the Cleveland Beekeeping Association.

"We also hope that the association's John Mace, whose hives we are hosting, will be able to provide some talks about the subject for our holiday guests," she added.
