EMERGENCY services are at the scene of a major fire on Teesside.

Ten fire engines are in attendance at Durham Lane Industrial Estate in Eaglescliffe.

People working in the area have been evacuated to a safe distance and the A66 and Durham Lane have been reopened in both directions.

A spokeswoman said: "Emergency services are currently on scene at a fire at Melbray Chemicals on Durham Lane Industrial Estate.

"There are no reports of any injuries or casualties at this time. The fire is under control and residents are still advised to stay indoors and to close windows and doors.

Whilst the smoke is not believed to be toxic we are advising people not to walk into plumes of smoke as the smoke may contain a substance which could cause skin irritation."

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade were called to Melbray Chemical Company Wass Way Durham Lane Industrial Park Eaglescliffe at 1.09pm. The incident was a fire involving plastic storage containers containing small quantities of chemicals.

“There have been no casualties at the scene. We have had in attendance ten pumping appliances plus an Incident Command Unit and Supporting Appliance. Fire Brigade have used foam to bring the fire under control and to protect adjoining tanks. The advice to local residents is to stay indoors and close windows if affected by smoke.”
